DUO BUD

Comprised of Jang-gu percussionist, Sora Kim and a string player Jihye Lim, well recognized for her sensible and lyrical music, DUO BUD reinterprets nature and the universe, the main motives of Korean folk, with the explosive energy of percussion and the delicate melody of string expanding the potential of instruments and the genre of tradition.  Their music communicates with the contemporary as it eliminates the boundaries lying in the traditional music structure and instrument and embracing musical elements from other genres of music such as jazz and rock while preserving the intrinsic style and beauty of Korean folk simultaneously. Their professional debut was made after winning the first place (KB Sori Award) at the 2015 Jeonju Int’l Sori Festival. Since then, DUO BUD has been musically active worldwide,
playing at the world renowned music festivals and theaters such as 2019 SXSW in USA, Babel Med Music in France, Golden Melody Awards, National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts and Pingtung Performing Arts Center in Taiwan, Okarina Festival in Slovenia, Ritmo Festival in Hungary and engage the world tour in Chicago, New York, Mexico and Cuba.

Repertory

1. [Starlight Consolation]

Through Starlight Consolation, our aim is to express our dreams of harmony and the beauty of rapport and ruth using the sounds of nature; how painters try to portray the beauty of nature with each stroke of their brush, we strive to express nature’s beauty that are seen as ubiquitous to the common eye, in our sense, to the common ear.

It is easy to forget how a lone star in the night sky or a tree in the middle of the city can offer consolation. This is our endeavor: to try and grasp the everyday familiarities for comfort and solace, taking nothing else from it. It is music that is willing to accept platitudes and banalities, using them to express our respective representations of the commonplace, and at the same time finding relief and being inspired by it. We hope the world will accept us with h open arms as we accept the natural world around us.

Starlight Consolation draws music that resembles the light-colored Korean traditional picture which describes the vibrant life force of trees on towering mountains besides a peacefully and serenely flowing river and a man introspects himself and returns to nature by managing life harmonized with nature. The music reinterprets moon, star, and universe, the main motives of Korean traditional music, with musicians’ own young perspectives and expresses them with the explosive energy of percussion, and the delicacy of melody of string to deliver catharsis and comfort to audiences across the world.

2. [Borderline]

Music 'exists' or 'doesn't exist' through 'moments.' On the border of existence, music is regarded as 'existing' only when it communicates and breathes with the audience. Our music expresses such processes and moments of verifying existence. In an attempt to present musical colors and images that are completely different from those of our existing works, we are willing to go beyond our musical limits by diversifying techniques and developing new ones.

DUO BUD_Dark Silence(짙은고요)

The dynamics and musical insights are created by the Daseoreum beat and spontaneity of two players expressing the mist in the morning darkness. Beats of Jang-gu kick off the song and Gayageum is added as the music develops. The different sounds from two instruments are eventually united and the charm of each instruments are radiated.

DUOBUD_Cloud(구름)

The melodic lines of Gayageum, one of the most delicate string instruments among the Korean traditional ones, stands out in this piece as it applies the distinctive playing styles of the strings such as vibrato and breaking notes through the sound of two strings, Yanggeum and Gayageum. This piece draws clouds drift across the blue clear sky and we hope listeners recalls the delightful reminiscences and wishes as we all find a hope from the sky in hard times.

DUOBUD_Star(별)

In the empty universe, my small star began.

Using various Gayageum techniques, changes in tempo and rhythm, this piece expresses this exact desired hope of wanting to be part of it all, the stars of the night sky, the lights.
